“for domestic audience” is exactly correct. Obama’s remarks have never moved beyond long standing American tenets of “America’s role in the world.” For that matter, neither has HRC.

Martin Indyk hints at this when he commented on how the US needs to balance our “values” with out “interests.” However, he does not go into specifics, which are easy to discern with a little thought. Suffice it to say, though, that the US will not really put its interests in any real danger. Not until something seismic happens (like Saudi tanks rolling over the Israel’s border for example) which leaves us little choice.
I look for the US to only go so far, and not an inch more.
